Swaffham Golf Club 100 years

Raising funds for Charity

Our Centenary celebrations continue apace with a lot planned for July!

In conjunction with Swaffham Rotary Club we have three events in support of EACH- our centenary charity.

On 4th July club professional Nic Cains, his assistant Ethan Roberts and club members Tom Rudge and Kyle Edge are each going to play 100 holes of golf in one day. For the non-golfers reading this that’s a huge undertaking- 5 and half rounds of golf! They will be starting at first light and will probably be playing for 15 hours.
You can support this special event at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/swaffham100holes or pop into the pro shop to donate and take part in a Nic’s fun predictions quiz.

On Sunday 10th July we are holding a family fun afternoon and everyone is welcome. If you haven’t visited us before why not make this the first time- lots of outdoor attractions for all the family!

Finally on 18th July the Rotary Club is hosting its annual golf day in support of EACH and other Rotary charities.

These special events are in addition to our Captain’s charities which raise money throughout the year. The men’s section is supporting Dementia UK, the Seniors’ charity is the Norfolk Hospice and the Ladies are raising funds for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Pictured below is Ladies’ Captain Ann Ewer with Her Majesty. Ann hosted a Jubilee cream tea in her garden for Swaffham members and neighbours-raising over £300 for this worthy cause.

Lots of good causes and lots of fun supporting them at Swaffham Golf Club!

Founders’ Day at Swaffham Golf Club

As part of our Centenary year, we decided to hold a History Exhibition at the Club, organised by one of our members, Ann Howarth.
For the past two years, Ann has been researching our seventeen Founding Members and has traced descendants, who have shared photographs and information. History is a hobby of Ann’s - a passion even - so this has been a labour of love, but it has still been a huge task.
During the week of the Exhibition (2-8 May), descendants of six founding members joined us at the Club. Our first President was Richard Morden Harbord Hamond, later 10th Baron Suffield, of The Manor House, Swaffham. Pictured below at the Exhibition are the current Lord Suffield with a life size photo of his grandfather, Ann Howarth and our Ladies Captain, Ann Ewer.
We are fortunate to have had support from other Swaffham groups. The local History Group and Swaffham Museum have both helped Ann with research. Local businesses are being very generous in supporting our Centenary events throughout the year. W H Brown sponsored our Founders’ Day.

We invited Dr Sue Gattuso, manager of Swaffham Heritage, to view the Exhibition on the Opening Day when she joined sixty others for ‘Afternoon Tea and Viewing’. We are delighted that the Exhibition has been such a success. In fact, more has come to light during the week, just by talking to visitors and finding out about their stories. Ann will be updating the information before passing it on to Swaffham Museum.

Swaffham Golf Clubhouse is open for food and drinks every day of the week. Our Family Day on 10th July is advertised in this edition of Swaffham Newsletter – open to all and free to enter. But you don’t need to wait till then! Please pop in – you will be made very welcome.

Centenary Opening Event

9th April

On 9th April, 100 golfers took part in the first of a series of events to mark the Club’s centenary year. Spring sunshine greeted the golfers as they teed off bright and early. After the round all enjoyed brunch and a celebratory glass of bucks fizz. Ian Richards, a local comedian, kept everyone entertained after the fabulous brunch buffet.

We had a field of 96 players and the winners were John Vincent, Colin Hutt, David White and Liam White with a nett 55.5. Congratulations!
2nd place, Darren Clubb, Trevor Brown, Paul Rayner and Stephen Clubb with a nett 55.9.
3rd place, Glen Head, Kevin Langley, Murree Groom and Andrew Sargent with a nett 56.9.

The highlight of the day was the unveiling of the new centenary clock at the first tee. The clock has been specially commissioned and is the members’ gift to the club. It was designed and produced by Darren Clubb - DRC Bespoke. Darren also donated a matching bench. The unveiling was performed by the Mayor of Swaffham, Councillor Judy Anscombe and Roy Brame, Chair of Breckland District Council.

Our thanks to go to local businesses supporting this event - Energise Pentney, 741 Awards and Travis Perkins.

The course is in great condition and the entrance to the course has been transformed through the hard work of greenkeepers and volunteers. . The new fence, flagpole, garden, Clock, bench and gathering area all work together to give us an impressive view from the entrance to the Course and up the fairway.

And it was the same story in the Clubhouse, the staff dressed and decorated the Clubroom and marquee to give the best setting for our Brunch and entertainment.

And that leads me to the next Centenary Event. It’s our 100th Birthday Party on Monday 2 May.

A different event to the Season Opener. We are celebrating our 100th Birthday with a Founders’ Day Exhibition and Afternoon Tea buffet.
