On Sunday 12 March, Swaffham Men travelled to Bury St Edmunds to compete in a Foursomes Friendly against the hosts. Bury St Edmunds have an excellent pedigree in the format winning the Hambro Cup in 2016 which is the equivalent to the Myhill Trophy in Norfolk.

Along with Dave Ashton, Brian Fenn and myself, Swaffham took 20 players, 5 pairs for both the Myhill and Cullington competitions, and after being treated to an excellent brunch took on the hosts…

Some excellent golf was played by home and away teams alike and the hosts came away with a victory in both matches. In the ‘Myhill’ fixture, a very strong Bury St Edmunds side containing no less than five ‘2’ handicap players defeated Swaffham by 14 holes overall.

The Cullington squad fared much better against their rivals losing out by only 1 hole overall. 3 of the pairs were victorious with one match halved and the one loss. Unfortunately, the deficit on the one loss was enough to give the hosts the win, but the home pairing was especially strong with 2 very good young players representing them.

Many thanks to all who played from Swaffham and further thanks to the Bury St Edmunds teams led by Phil Smailes and Colin Aves and to the club staff whose hospitality and welcome were superb. The course is a well established track, and is certainly a challenge given its length and I believe that all the Swaffham players should walk away from the experience with their heads held high. Dave, Brian and myself have certainly got some good discussions to have prior to the return fixture with Bury St Edmunds, and of course the first round proper of the Myhill and Cullington at the end of April.

Next competitive match will be in the Handicap League against Richmond Park on Saturday 18th March @ 12:00. Team to play is a follows:

Keith Creed

Colin Blowers

Andy Palmer

Stuart Rodwell

Ian Livingstone

Graeme Cowie

David Meade

Kevin Langley

I’m sure the team will appreciate any support you may wish to give them if you can.

See you all soon
