Captain’s Weekend

Well what can I say, what a fantastic weekend! Thank you to everyone who took part in the competitions over both days and enjoyed the entertainment and activities on Saturday night. The event was a very special occasion for me and the way the members and their guests enjoyed themselves was brilliant. Your generosity to Lu and my chosen charity, East Anglian Air Ambulance, was superb and our combined total for the year is well past the £2,000.00 mark, so thank you all very much once again.

On Saturday evening musical entertainment was provided until the small hours by Harley Street who had a full dance floor from beginning to end. The inflatable dartboard provided fun and games with members and guests alike trying to achieve the highest score from 5 balls. This was achieved by Zoe Johnson with 160 points (Zoe is Nic’s girlfriend so bragging rights to her for the next few days!).

An extremely entertaining trick shot show was put on by Jeremy Dale, who travelled up from Heythrop Park, Oxfordshire. Everyone who spectated were impressed by his skill and agility and I think a few were looking to take some of the shots onto the course, and on Sunday they got the opportunity…

As part of the Pairs Texas Scramble, Jeremy was stationed on the 9th tee and competitors were offered the opportunity to take on a trick tee shot by aiming to hit a ball off an 18 inch high tee. Some had varying levels of success as you will see from the video¬†link below. Robert Frame however did get to grips with the higher tee, made a cracking tee shot and bagged a prize into the bargain…

On the Saturday the Captain’s Trophy was competed for and an impressive field of 62 players took to the course. Conditions were good and at my request some ‘interesting’ pin positions were located on the greens. Top of the pile once all cards were handed in was Ann Ewer with a nett score of 70. Well done Ann! She managed to secure the victory on count-back from Murree Groom. 3rd place was also a tight affair with no less than 5 players recording a nett score of 71. After the count-back calculation was completed Ian Livingstone took the place.

Sunday saw the more fun competition take place with the format being Texas Scramble Pairs. 44 pairs took part and it was great to see the course full. Each team would record strokes and have 25% of their combined handicap taken off their overall score. Coming out on top of the pile with a magnificent score of 62.75 were Ben Willis and Anthony Smith. Making up the places were Graeme Cowie & Cathy Shand, Dave Wing & Barry Croxford and Roger Garrod & Mike Precious. Best mixed pair after Graeme and Cathy were Andy & Pat Hancock who claimed that prize. Well done to all!

It was an absolute pleasure to put on this weekend and meet so many of you, none of this could be possible without the SGC staff so a huge thank you to all of the them too who helped make the weekend such a special event.
